Regulations on the single document for the evaluation of occupational risks
The single document for the evaluation of occupational risks is compulsory in France, since 2001, for any company employing workers. The update of this single document must be done at least once a year. It contains an inventory of occupational risks and an assessment of them.

The single document must be made available to the employees
The single document for the evaluation of occupational risks is called in French : document unique pour l’évaluation des risques.

The filling in of the single document for the evaluation of occupational risks is compulsory in France since november 5, 2001.

Objective of the document
The inventory of the hazards is done by the employer or a representative of him, in each work unit of the company by observing the tasks (the real work), hearing from the employees’opinions, etc. :
- It is useful to arrange small working group meetings in every work unit to identify the unsafe situations,
- and also analyse the occupational accidents to identify the usafe situations.
Objective of the single document :
- improve health at work, by reducing the occupational accidents and the occupational diseases.
The employer assesses the occupational risks
The employer is responsible of the risk evaluation, he has to assess :
- the seriousness of every hazard,
- the probability of its occurence,
- so to identify the major risks and define the priority plan to prevent them
The fill in of the single document for the assessment of occupational risks
- Only occupational risks really observed in the enterprise must be written in the single document.
- The document can be written on paper or on an electronic document.
The update of the single document for the assessment of occupational risks
The update of this single document has to take place at least once a year or when occures any work process change.
The single document must be made available to the employees
According to the French Labor Code (article R. 4121-4) , the information given in the single document for the assessment of occupational risks must be available to :
- the workers,
- the members of the health, safety and working conditions committee,
- the staff representatives,
- the occupational physician,
- the labour inspector,
- the members of other occupational risk prevention organisations (according to the French Labour Code : article L. 4643-1),
- the radiological protection inspector (according to the French Code of Public Health articles L. 1333-17 and L. 1333-18)
Since 2008, the employer has to set up a poster in the company, that any employee can clearly see and which explains where the single document for the assessment of occupational risks can be read.
